How to access and/or export OroTimesheet 4 data to/from other software ?

The information in this article applies to :
OroTimesheet 4.x (English)
OroTimesheet 4.x (French)

Description

Data Export:
A powerful reports generator is included with OroTimesheet 4. In addition to generating reports, the reports generator is also used to export data from OroTimesheet 4 database to external files. Refer to the OroTimesheet 4 online help for more information on how to export data and/or create reports for data exportation with the reports generator included with OroTimesheet 4. Note that some reports for data exportation are already built and ready to use into OroTimesheet 4.

Data access:
OroTimesheet 4 uses the InterBase 6 "Open Source" version database to store its data. InterBase 6 is a relational database that can be installed on Windows, Linux and Solaris platforms.

Using InterBase 6 "Open Source" version with OroTimesheet 4 gives users a great reliability and stability (relational database), a low licensing cost (InterBase 6 "Open Source" version is free, only OroTimesheet 4 licenses must be bought) without forgetting that InterBase 6 can be installed on the platform of your choice (Windows, Linux, Solaris).

Many application software or programming languages can access InterBase 6 databases natively while other must use other way such as an ODBC driver.

OroTimesheet 4 access the InterBase 6 database natively. No ODBC driver is necessary to OroTimesheet 4 to access the database. On the other hand if you want to access OroTimesheet 4 database from other software or reports generators (By example: Ms Access, Excel, Crystal reports, etc.) and these one don't support InterBase 6 access natively, the best way is to use an ODBC driver for InterBase 6.

To access OroTimesheet 4 database from your own custom software, the programming language you currently use can perhaps also access InterBase 6 databases natively. If not, you can access the database by using an ODBC driver for InterBase 6.

Solution
To simply export data from OroTimesheet 4, the use of the reports generator included with OroTimesheet 4 is the easiest and recommended way.

On the other hand if you want to access OroTimesheet 4 database from other applications, an ODBC driver for InterBase 6 must be used (unless you can access database from a software or a programming language which can access InterBase 6 databases natively).

No ODBC driver is included with OroTimesheet 4 since this one does not need it. On the other hand several manufacturers developed some that are available free or at a low cost.

Here some Web sites of manufacturers of ODBC drivers for InterBase 6 (Note that this list is not exhaustive and is available only on a purely informative basis. OroLogic Inc is not associated to any of the manufacturers enumerated below):

Gemini InterBase ODBC Driver => http://www.geocities.com/ibdatabase
Easysoft ODBC-InterBase Driver => http://www.easysoft.com
XTG InterBase 6 ODBC Driver => http://www.xtgsystems.com

Some hints on the choice and the configuration of an ODBC driver:

- Be sure that the ODBC driver is compatible with InterBase 6.

- When you configure a connection using your ODBC driver, ensure that you set the following values for the following parameters:

Default Character Set: ISO8859_1
SQL Dialect: 3

Information

Please note that OroLogic Inc does not provide any support on ODBC drivers or programming languages used to access OroTimesheet 4 database. Consult the documentation of your ODBC driver, your programming language or InterBase 6 to know how to configure those to access OroTimesheet 4 database. Also note that accessing OroTimesheet 4 database from a programming language, other software, ODBC drivers or any other ways is at your own risks.
