When installing Windows XP or Windows ME, an utility named "System restore" is automatically activated. This utility backups several files (depending on the file extension such as .EXE, .BAT, .BD, etc.) on a regular basis. This utility allows the user to restore a previous Windows configuration for example, when a problem is encountered.

However, this utility also backups files with the extension .GDB (Interbase 6 database files). Since the default database file of OroTimesheet 4 is named OT4.GDB, this file is also backed up by this utility.

As soon as one of these files is modified, this file is automatically backed up by the Windows system restore utility. So, for example, when you use OroTimesheet 4, the database can be backed up at any time and can dramatically reduce application performances.

Also, for example, if you decide to restore a previous Windows configuration, the OroTimesheet 4 database file will be overwritten with an old version and you will automatically loose all data entered from the date of the previous Windows configuration you want to restore.

If you backup your OroTimesheet 4 database on a regular basis as indicated in the OroTimesheet 4 online help, there is no problem if you decide to restore a previous Windows version. So, after the system restore is completed, just restore your OroTimesheet 4 database previously backed up. However, this don't resolve the performance problems mentioned above.

Here are two solutions to avoid problems between the OroTimesheet 4 database and the Windows system restore option.


Solution 1:
You can simply disable the Windows "System restore" option.

To disable this option under Windows XP:

From the Windows control panel, double-click the "System" icon then select the tab "System restore". Check the box "Turn off System Restore on all drives"

To disable this option under Windows ME:

From the Windows control panel, double-click on the "System" icon then select the tab "Performance". Then, click the button "File system…" then, select the "Troubleshooting " tab. Check the box "Disable System Restore".


Solution 2:
If you don't want to disable the Windows system restore option, you can rename the OroTimesheet 4 database file. For example, rename the file OT4.GDB to OT4.IB. Since files with the extension .IB are not considered by the Windows system restore option, even if later, you restore a previous Windows configuration, your database file will not be overwritten. After renaming the database file, edit your connection (using the Connections manager included with OroTimesheet 4) to indicate to OroTimesheet 4 to access from now the OT4.IB file instead of the OT4.GDB file.

Also, this solution resolves the performance problems as indicated above, since the files with the extension .IB are not considered by the Windows system restore option.

Note: Please note that the default OroTimesheet 4 database file (Ot4.GDB) will be renamed to OT4.IB in a next version of OroTimesheet.
