| #FAQ: 10025-EN, Date: 7/9/2001 How to do a backup or a restore operation of the GDS 2000 PRO database with the "IBConsole" utility of INTERBASE 6. |
| The information in this article applies to : GDS 2000 PRO (English) GDS 2000 PRO (French) Description This procedure explains how to use the "IBConsole" utility to do a backup and/or restore operation of the GDS 2000 PRO database.
This procedure is also valid to restore the GDS 2000 PRO database previously backed up from the "Tools/Backup the database" menu of GDS 2000 PRO. For more information on backup and restore operation refer to the "Operations Guide" manual in the INTERBASE documentation (downloadable separately from the web site of INTERBASE at http://www.borland.com/interbase ). Solution If INTERBASE is installed on a LINUX server, you need to have the "Super Server" version of INTERBASE installed on your LINUX server to be able to use the "IBConsole" utility mentionned in the procedure below. If you have the "Classic Server" version of INTERBASE installed on your LINUX server, refer to the "Operations Guide" manual in the INTERBASE documentation to use the "gbak" command line utility instead of "IBConsole"
Backup of the GDS 2000 PRO database: You can backup the GDS 2000 PRO database while other users are accessing the database. However, all changes made after the backup operation is started will not be backed up. 1- Run the "IBConsole" utility included with GDS 2000 PRO. 2- Double click on the server where the database is located. (If the database is on your local computer, select "Local server). Type "SYSDBA" in the "User Name" field and "masterkey" in the "Password" field and click on the "Login" button. (If you have changed the password for the "SYSDBA" INTERBASE user, type the new password in the "Password" field instead of "masterkey"). 3- Select the database to be backed up. Don't connect to this database, only select it by clicking once on the database. Note: For steps 2 and 3 above, if it is the first time you use the "IBConlole" utility and your server or your database is not listed, refer to our FAQ 10024-EN in the support section of our web site or to the "Operations Guide" manual in the INTERBASE documentation, to know how to register a server and/or a database in the "IBConsole" utility. 4- Select the "Database", then "Maintenance", "Backup / Restore" and "Backup" menu. 5- Select the database to be backed up from the "Alias" combo box in the "Database" section, if not already selected. 6- From the "Alias" field in the "Backup File(s)" section, type an alias name for the backup file, by example "GDSBACKUP". 7- From the "Filename(s)" field in the "Backup File(s)" section, type the complete path and filename for the backup file to be created. For example, if the GDS 2000 PRO database file is located in the "C:\Program Files\OroLogic\GDSPRO\" folder, you can save the backup file in the same folder. So you can type "C:\Program Files\OroLogic\GDSPRO\MYBACKUP.BAK" as filename for the backup file. Note that the ".BAK" extension in the example above is not obligatory. You can type an extension of your choice. 8- Click on the "OK" button to start the backup operation. After the backup operation is completed, you should get the "Database backup completed" message. Click on the "OK" button to close the window. The backup operation is finished and you can close the "IBConsole" utility. 9- It is strongly recommended to verify that the backup file has been created in the folder you typed in the "Filename(s)" field. Restore of the GDS 2000 PRO database from a backup file: You cannot restore the GDS 2000 PRO database while other users are accessing the database. Before a restore operation, be sure nobody is accessing the database else the restore operation will fail. It is also strongly recommended to make a copy of the GDS 2000 PRO database file (Usually "GDS2000P.GDB") with the "copy" command or the windows explorer utility under Windows or with the "cp" commmand under Unix/Linux, before doing a restore operation over the GDS 2000 PRO database. By doing this, you ensure to have an original copy of your database before any modifications. 3- Select the database to be restored. 4- Select the "Database", then "Maintenance", "Backup / Restore" and "Restore" menu. 5- If you previously made a backup of the GDS 2000 PRO database with the "IBConsole" utility, select the alias you typed when you did the backup operation, from the "Alias" combobox in the "Database" section (by example "GDSBACKUP"). If the backup file to restore was not made with the "IBConsole" utility, select "File...". If the selected server is "Local Server" a dialog box will be displayed. From the "Files of type" section, select "All files (*.*)" then select the backup file to be restored. If the selected server is not "Local Server", type the backup file filename to be restored, manually in the "Filename(s)" field from the "Backup File(s)" section. By example "C:\Program Files\OroLogic\GDSPRO\MYBACKUP.BAK". 6- In the "Server" field of the "Database" section, select the server where the GDS 2000 PRO is located. 7- In the "Alias" field of the "Database" section, select the GDS 2000 PRO database. 8- In the "Page Size (Bytes)" field of the "Options" section, select "4096". 9- In the "Overwrite" field of the "Options" section, select "True". 10- Click on the "OK" button to start the restore operation. After the restore operation is completed, you should get the "Database restore completed" message. Click on the "OK" button to close the window. The restore operation is finished and you can close the "IBConsole" utility. Status |
